A rebirth has occurred in the seacoast village of Rockport, Mass. Much like the coming of Spring, the Emerson Inn by the Sea is a refreshing change of atmosphere. Renovated under the stewardship of innkeepers and owners, Bruce and Michele Coates, the Inn displays the essence of the past, finely preserved in a distinctive New England setting. |
In the 1850's, Emerson, probably in top hat and tails, sat on Cathedral rocks and made his "acquaintance with the sea."
| Emerson Inn By The Sea, one of Rockport's original summer hotels, began as the Pigeon Cove House in 1846 when William Norwood sold the tavern near the present Pigeon Cove post office in order to relocate to a place better suited to the carriage trade of the day. It was during this period that Ralph Waldo Emerson, then on the lecture circuit, vacationed here in the company of other notables of the day. In 1965, this elegant historic hotel was restored and renamed for its most famous guest. |
All of our 36 rooms have a private bath, air conditioning, color cable television, and telephones. Wireless internet connection is also available. |

Enjoy a peaceful night's rest, awakening to the warm welcome of an Atlantic Ocean sunrise. From a leisurely stroll through Rockport or nearby Gloucester, to marine-life adventure snorkeling, to a hike among the fall foliage or along the shore of Cape Ann, the Emerson Inn by the Sea is surrounded by a diversity of summer and winter activities.
Rockport is a small seaport one hour north of Boston at the end of Route 128. (Take route 127 from Gloucester until you see our sign in Pigeon Cove) Most famous as an art colony, the town was a major granite shipper until the depression closed the quarries. Today, vacationers sunbathe on the rocks and beaches, take walks through the woods or along the shore, or watch the whales from boats out of Rockport or Gloucester. The Rockport Golf Club has a fine nine hole course about three miles from the Emerson, and there are tennis courts less than a mile from the inn.
The Emerson is open year-round
Although the town is "dry," you may drink anywhere on the premises. We cannot sell drinks, but there is a package store about two miles from the inn. We are a traditional country inn. Half of our rooms face the Ocean, and our top floor suite has a balcony with a truly spectacular Ocean view. Although we are easy to reach by car, Rockport also has good rail service from North Station in Boston. Complimentary shuttle service is available to and from the Rockport
Salt-water swimming pool is open seasonally. Indoor whirlpool and sauna are available year round.

Weddings at the Emerson Inn By The Sea:
The Emerson is available all year and can accommodate parties from 50 to 150, using a cocktail party format. Although this is the style we feel utilizes our inn to its best advantage, groups of 70 or less can be served with a sit-down dinner. We do hope that you will call us to schedule a visit to the Inn to talk with us about your Wedding plans. We feel that this is the best way for you to decide that the Emerson Inn will, indeed, be the ideal place for your reception.
We all look forward to serving you and your guests for an Oceanside "affair to remember" at the Emerson Inn By The Sea. |
We know you will enjoy Rockport, as so many of our returning guests do, and hope you will spend your Cape Ann vacation here with us at the Emerson Inn By The Sea
